Former Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) launched a scathing attack on Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis‘ 2024 campaign on Thursday.
What Happened: She said that the Florida Republican governor possessed the “personality of a dead frog” and predicted his attempts to “out-Trump Trump” through the dissemination of “more hate and bigoted language” would ultimately lead to failure.
The former senator, who is now a political analyst, told MSNBC’s Alex Wagner that the Florida governor’s “biggest problem” is that “in order to be a con man, you have to have showmanship.”
“He is awkward. Frankly, he has the personality of kind of a dead frog,” McCaskill said, adding, “It is really not a guy that is going to light up a room or light up a hall or light up a rally with his showmanship.”
“The people that are with Trump now are not going anywhere. They are certainly not going to abandon him for somebody who is just kinda a wannabe of Donald Trump.”
Why It Matters: Despite enjoying popularity in his home state of Florida, DeSantis currently trails behind former President Trump in national polls, reported The Hill.
According to a recent poll conducted by Echelon Insights, Trump leads the race with 49% support, while DeSantis secures second place with 16%.
Another contender, Vivek Ramaswamy, claims 10% support, ranking third. Comparing the results to a previous poll in May, Ramaswamy has gained 2 points from 8%, while DeSantis has experienced a decline of 3 points from his previous position of 19%.
