Would you use this quirky airplane headrest on your summer vacation?

TruRest claims to aid deep sleep on airlines by letting you lean forward onto a special padded support clipped to the tray table.

Massachusetts-based company Hypnap says the $145 (£116) device is easy to set up, adjustable, weighs only 18 oz and is portable.

It folds into the footprint of an iPad, and is TSA-approved, so it can be transported as carry-on in a purse or backpack.

The designer, Hypnap CEO Chloe Hill, created the relaxation aid after being stuck on a plane for 32 hours.

She said: “I got the idea for TruRest from a miserable flight I took from Singapore to NYC.

“We were seated on the plane for 32 hours due to a problem with the hydraulics. I have a design background so I sketched ideas and built prototypes.”

Hypnap COO, Darryl Yang, a former computer programmer and frequent business traveller said: “I wish I would have had something like this on my flights. That’s why I joined forces with Chloe to launch TruRest.”

The firm says they consulted medical professionals, examined medical research and conducted extensive testing while developing TruRest. They discovered that resting in the forward leaning position facilitates deeper, easier breathing which promotes the relaxation response. It could also potentially relieve neck and back pain.

Hypnap said: “Comfort and quality rest are often elusive for airplane passengers. If sleep is achieved, it’s typically light and ineffective which is why flyers often arrive at their destinations exhausted and in pain. Travelers can address this pain point and finally achieve true rest, with TruRest.

“TruRest fully supports the user’s body (both chest/torso and head) in the forward leaning position, eliminating muscle tension and discomfort caused by sitting upright, and facilitating deep, quality rest and relaxation–even REM sleep.”

TruRest is currently being crowdfunded, with early bird units available for $145 (£116).
